Data Sharing, Availability and Reproducibility Policy

International Journal of Contemporary Security Studies (IJCSS) promotes transparent and reproducible research while recognising legitimate ethical, legal and security restrictions.

Data Availability Statement

Every research article must include a Data Availability Statement explaining where supporting data, code and research instruments can be found or why access is restricted. Public data should be deposited in a trusted institutional or disciplinary repository, or a general repository such as Zenodo or OSF, with a persistent identifier where available.

Materials and methods

Authors should provide sufficient methodological detail to understand and, where feasible, reproduce the analysis. Relevant code, questionnaires, coding frameworks and protocols should accompany the data or be described in the statement. Preregistration and recognised reporting guidelines should be used where appropriate.

Qualitative and sensitive data

Interview transcripts and other qualitative material must not be shared where disclosure would compromise consent, anonymity or safety. The same principle applies to confidential, classified or legally restricted information and data whose release could endanger people, institutions, critical infrastructure or national security. Controlled access, redacted data, synthetic data or metadata-only records may be used when justified.

Retention and requests

Authors must preserve original records and analysis documentation for the period required by their institutions, funders and applicable law. Reasonable reader requests should be answered, subject to stated restrictions and proportionate identity or purpose checks for controlled access.

Research integrity

Fabrication, falsification, undisclosed manipulation and selective reporting are prohibited. Concerns may result in requests for original records, institutional referral and appropriate editorial action.

Acceptable statements

  • “The dataset and analysis code are available in Zenodo at [persistent identifier].”
  • “De-identified data are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request and subject to ethics approval.”
  • “The data cannot be shared because participant consent did not cover public disclosure; the study instruments and coding framework are available at [repository].”
  • “No new data were created or analysed in this study.”
